10am: Planning the High School Years: Gearing Up for College

College application season happens senior year, but the planning for college starts much earlier. If you have a student getting ready to enter high school it’s not too early to start thinking about the process. In this session we will each year of high school and what students (and their families) can be doing to be as prepared as possible for applying to college broken down into easy to follow step by step directions. All attendees will leave with a free copy of the Ultimate High School Timeline for Getting Into College.

11am: Beyond the Ivy League: How to choose the right college for your student

Everyone wants their child to get the best education they can and when it comes to college there are a few places that everyone knows. There are so many lists but what do those rankings even mean? Choosing a college is much more than picking a school. It has to be the right school for your child; where they can flourish but be challenged, have opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, a place that becomes home and helps launch their career. Come find out about all the different types of colleges and universities out there and how to choose the one that fits best. Learn what to ask on the campus tour (and what you can ignore), how to compare schools, and how to get the real inside scoop on campus life. Understanding the college process starts here!

What does it take to get into college? Is it really all about the test scores? How many extracurriculars should my child have? Do they really need foreign language? And seriously they need how many volunteer hours?  In this session learn how colleges and universities make admissions decisions and how you can hack the system in your favor. Admissions decisions can be complicated but we will pull back the curtain and give you all the secrets the schools don’t want you to know (like how to get college credits in high school for next to nothing!) College admissions can be a game, but you can’t win if you don’t know the rules.

12pm: My Child The Social Media Star & Networking Lunch

So your child wants to be a YouTube star? Maybe they are just starting out, or maybe they already have tens of thousands of followers. What do parents need to know about navigating this uncharted territory? This workshop will discuss how to build a following using the Golden Rules of Social Media (there are 3!), when to start thinking about managers and publicists (if at all) and navigating sponsorship contracts. There will also be time to connect and network with other parents. Bring something to eat and come meet others who children are making it big online.

What is FAFSA and when do I fill it out? Where are the best places to find scholarships? What is the difference between grants and loans? One of the biggest concerns about college is how to pay for it. Come find out everything you need to know about financial aid and funding for school including a few insider tips such as the best kept secret to finding scholarship money, and why you shouldn’t judge a college based on the sticker price.

We have often heard it’s not about what you know, it’s who you know. And that’s still totally true; the only thing that’s changed is how you met them. In this session we discover why having a person brand is so important to landing internships and being recruited for jobs, and how your child’s love of social media and the internet will make the process of developing a personal brand so much easier. Leave with a blueprint on what it takes to build a strong brand and the individual steps your child can take to start telling their story.

4pm: The Big Four: A Primer on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest

In this session we will cover the biggest social media platforms, what they are, and why so many people use them. What platform is best for what sorts of connections, and what’s the difference between a friend and a follow? A group and a page? A story and a retweet? Why are people so obsessed by social media and how does it affect mental health? If you have ever wanted to learn more about a platform, or just understand what all the fuss is about, bring your questions and don’t miss this session!

4pm: The Next Big Thing: Getting to Know Snapchat

It’s the next big thing and it’s already here; Snapchat is taking over the teen demographic in a big way. But what is it all about? What’s up with those filters and why is everyone under 20 obsessed with these disappearing messages? In this workshop we will cover the app’s basics including getting started, friending and following, and what parents need to know about snapping safely.
